This season has seen a resurgence in the number of stylish subcompact concepts being offered by Japanese and German companies.

One of the most recent is the Volkswagen UP! Carrying on the tradition of European ‘city cars’ the UP! is a small, futuristic looking vehicle that wouldn’t look out of place on the streets of Stuttgart in 2025.

Despite an overall length of only 135.8 inches, the UP! is designed to carry 4 adults in safety and comfort, due in part to the fact that the rear engine placement allows the cabin to shift forward.
